HOMEOPATHY
What is homeopathy?
Homeopathy has been used successfully in many countries for nearly 200 years. It is a gentle system of healing which triggers the body to repair itself. Homeopathy is holistic which means that it treats the whole person and encompasses the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of an individual as well as any physical symptoms.
How does homeopathy work?
Treatment is based on a number of principles, one of which is 'like cures like'. This means that substances which in large quantities may cause certain symptoms of sickness in a healthy person can cure similar symptoms if given as a homeopathically prepared remedy. It is thought that the remedy acts as a reminder to the body and re-establishes the natural self-healing ability we all have.
What can homeopathy treat?
Homeopathy treats the individual rather than the disease so the range of conditions that can be helped is huge! Whilst a diagnosis can seem useful, in homeopathy it is rare that the same complaint is always treated with the same remedy. For example, 10 people with migraine will probably need 10 different remedies thus reflecting each individual's unique experience of the condition. Homeopaths use a wide range of symptoms that may seem unrelated to the central complaint in order to select remedies. This means that if you have few specific symptoms but are feeling 'not quite right' then a homeopathic remedy can still be found. It also means that if you are feeling well a remedy can be prescribed to maintain good health! Indeed, one of the key aims of homeopathy is to maintain health once it has been re-established.
Can remedies be taken with other medication?
Homeopathic remedies can be taken safely alongside any conventional medicine. Sometimes, the beneficial effect of the remedy may be reduced by certain drugs in which case a daily remedy will be recommended. Prescription drugs should never be stopped without discussion with your doctor.
How are the remedies made?
Remedies are made by a process called dilution and succussion whereby the energetic blueprint or pattern of the substance is held in the remedy but without any of the original material. The majority of remedies are made from plants and minerals and each one has been through a process called 'proving' in order to identify its particular properties.
What does the consultation involve?
During the consultation, a full case history is taken covering a wide range of symptoms. This will include details that may seem unrelated to your current condition but this is because homeopathy considers all symptoms to be interrelated and relevant to the selection of the appropriate remedy.
